Where Control4 sits in the market
Control4 (now part of Snap One) is the most widely installed professional control platform in North America. It's dealer-delivered and professionally programmed like Crestron, but built around a more standardized software stack — which makes projects faster to configure and generally less expensive to program than fully custom platforms.
In an honest hierarchy of the professional platforms, Crestron is the reference standard for large, complex estates, and Control4 is the capable, well-priced choice for most substantial homes below that scale. That's not a knock — for a great many projects, Control4 is simply the right-sized answer.
The control layer, in real numbers
Using the planning model behind our whole-home cost estimator, calibrated to a baseline home of roughly 4,000 square feet: an essential Control4 control layer — controller, a touchscreen or two, keypads, remotes, and the configuration labor to tie your systems together — typically lands in the $10,000–$22,000 range installed.
A deeper scope — touchpanels in most rooms, extensive keypads, richer scenes and scheduling, integration across lighting, shades, climate, security, and multi-zone AV — runs into the $28,000–$65,000 territory. Larger homes scale up from these baselines; run your square footage through the estimator for a personalized range.
What the control layer doesn't include
As with any platform, most of a 'Control4 quote' isn't the control system. Whole-home audio, video distribution, the lighting-control hardware, shades, networking, and surveillance each carry their own budgets, and together they usually represent three-quarters or more of the total. The control layer is the conductor, not the orchestra.
This is where quotes get slippery: a low headline number often means subsystems were scoped thin, and a high one often means the dealer's favorite margins are hiding in zones you didn't ask for. The brand on the processor tells you nothing about either.
Control4 vs. Crestron vs. Savant on price
For comparable scope, Control4 generally comes in below Crestron — mostly on programming labor, since Crestron's fully custom interfaces take more engineering hours. Savant typically prices between the two. The hardware deltas are real but smaller than people assume; labor is where the platforms genuinely differ.
The right question isn't 'which is cheapest' but 'which is right-sized for this house.' Paying Crestron-level programming for a home that Control4 serves perfectly is over-specification; forcing Control4 to the edge of its envelope on a sprawling multi-structure estate buys frustration. An advisor with no dealership has no reason to steer you either way.
Keeping a Control4 quote honest
Control4's dealer network is enormous, which is good news: competition is easy to create. Define the scope independently — rooms, zones, behaviors, device counts — and put the identical document in front of two or three qualified dealers. The spread routinely surprises owners.
