Why the platform decision matters so much
The control platform is the nervous system of a connected building. It ties together lighting, audio-video, shades, climate, security, and access into a single experience. Changing it later is enormously expensive, so it's worth getting right the first time.
The catch: most homeowners hear about a platform from the integrator certified to install it. That's a recommendation filtered through what the company is set up to sell — not necessarily what fits the project.
Crestron
Crestron is the most capable and customizable platform, and the default for large, complex estates where bespoke programming and reliability justify the cost. With capability comes complexity: Crestron systems are typically custom-programmed, which means they're powerful but more dependent on the quality of the programmer and the documentation behind them.
Crestron Home has made the platform more approachable for mid-scale projects, while custom Crestron programming remains the ceiling for ambitious whole-building integration.
Control4
Control4 hits a sweet spot of capability, ecosystem breadth, and cost. It supports an enormous range of third-party devices and scales from a single room to a large home. For many luxury residences it delivers the great majority of what Crestron does at a more accessible price and with a large dealer network.
Savant
Savant is known for a polished, design-forward user experience and strong audio heritage. It appeals to clients who prioritize interface elegance and Apple-like usability, and it integrates power and energy management well. Its dealer network is smaller than Control4's, so local support is a real consideration.
How to actually choose
Weigh four things: the complexity of what you want to control, your budget, who will support the system long-term, and how much customization you genuinely need. A modest project saddled with a fully custom Crestron system is over-built; a sprawling estate on an entry-tier platform is under-built.
Most importantly, remember that a well-specified Control4 system will outperform a poorly-specified Crestron one every time. The quality of the design and documentation matters more than the badge on the processor — which is exactly why an independent specification is worth more than a platform allegiance.
