High-end interior representative of AVX Designs' work

About AVX Designs

Two decades on the build side. Now entirely on yours.

We built the kind of advisor we wished our clients had — backed by twenty years of designing, programming, and engineering the systems most people only ever see a quote for.

The founder

AVX Designs is led by Wyatt Olsen, who has spent more than twenty years engineering the very systems most homeowners only ever see a price for. He started in 2003 installing home theaters — learning the craft cable by cable — and by 2005 had opened his own AV design, installation, and programming firm.

Along the way he ran a residential home-theater company in Rhode Island while programming for a worldwide Crestron and AMX integrator — work that sent him across the globe, including a flagship installation in Singapore. Born in Santa Barbara and raised mostly in Vermont, he came home to the California coast in 2009. Having earned his stripes as both a laborer and a master programmer, he became known for engineering-first integration: systems designed on paper, documented, and built to last for years, not seasons.

Why he went independent

Two decades in the field taught Wyatt exactly where the money goes — and where it's wasted. He watched clients oversold on equipment they didn't need, and recommendations shaped by margin rather than merit. The best technology, he came to believe, is the technology you actually want, properly installed by people held to a documented standard.

So he built AVX Designs: a purely independent consultancy with no manufacturer relationships and no equipment to sell. The same engineering rigor that produced reference theaters and global flagships now works for one party only — the owner. When the honest answer is "you don't need that," there's finally someone free to say so.

Engineering-first, always

His reputation was built behind the wall, not in front of it. Anyone can mount a TV; the difference is the clean racks, labeled runs, segmented networks, and documentation you actually own. That discipline is exactly what an independent specification gives you — a system defined to perform and to be serviced, then competitively bid so you pay for engineering, not markup.

Credentials — earned, not claimed

20+ years, hands-on

Installer, master programmer, designer, and integration-firm founder — every seat at the table.

Master Crestron & AMX

Expert-level control-system programming, residential to global enterprise flagships.

Licensed contractor

California CSLB #1108192, plus contractor's licenses across multiple states.

Engineering-first

Systems designed on paper and documented — schematic through calibration — before anything is bought.

The road here

Twenty years, in fast-forward.

2003

The first cable

Starts in home-theater installation, learning the craft the only way it can be learned — in real living rooms, cable by cable, mistake by mistake. Falls permanently in love with the work.

2005

His own shingle

Two years in, opens his own AV design, installation, and programming firm. Learns early what most integrators never say out loud: the proposal is a sales document, and somebody should be reading it for the client.

2006–2009

The global years

Runs a residential home-theater company in Rhode Island while programming for a worldwide Crestron and AMX integrator — boardrooms, command centers, and flagship projects across the globe, including a landmark installation in Singapore. Residential taste, enterprise discipline.

2009

Home to the coast

Born in Santa Barbara and raised mostly in Vermont, he comes back to the California coast for good. The Central Coast becomes home base — and eventually, home for his family.

2010s

Master of the craft

Earns master-level Crestron and AMX programming credentials and a California contractor's license (CSLB #1108192), with licenses held across multiple states. Builds a reputation for engineering-first integration: designed on paper, documented, verified at walkthrough.

2020s

The build-side years

Founds and leads a Central Coast integration firm serving estate-scale residences — thousands of projects across a career, from single rooms to whole properties. When off-the-shelf design tools fall short, he writes his own software. Twenty years of watching where the money goes, and where it's wasted.

2024

AVX Designs

Everything the build side taught him, turned around to face the other way: a purely independent consultancy with no equipment to sell and no manufacturer to please. The spec, the bid, and the oversight — accountable to the owner alone.

Today

The proof keeps coming

On a recent Palm Beach engagement, independent design and a competitive bid delivered the family's full automation vision for over $100,000 less than the quotes in hand — while raising the quality of what got installed. That's the model, working.

Off the clock

A boutique firm, led from the front.

Wyatt lives on the California Central Coast with his wife and young family. When he isn't designing systems he's most likely on the water with a fishing rod, out on the trails or in the gym, or in the kitchen — he cooks, barbecues, and brews his own beer.

His own house is the test lab: whole-home control, lighting, shades, and audio he programmed himself, lived with daily by the toughest review panel there is — a young family. A lifelong love of all things tech, and a longer list of hobbies than he can count. AVX is intentionally boutique: the person advising you is the person who has actually built it.

Our mission

Independent expertise, on your side of the table.

To give every client — homeowner, architect, or developer — the independent expertise they need to make confident decisions about the technology in their home or building.

Independence

No brand allegiances and no profit margins to protect. The recommendation is driven by your project alone.

Transparency

Clear communication about what we recommend and what it should cost — honest answers over comfortable ones.

Accountability

We stay on a project until it's finished and verified. 'Basically done' isn't done.

Expertise

Every recommendation comes from someone who has actually pulled the cable and programmed the system.
