Projector or TV — which is right?
There's no universal answer — it comes down to your room and how you watch. Answer four quick questions and we'll give you an honest, vendor-neutral recommendation, with the reasoning behind it.
1 How much light is in the room?
2 How big do you want the picture?
3 What will you watch most?
4 What kind of room is it?
A quiz gets you in the ballpark. As an independent consultant, AVX doesn't sell displays — we spec the right one for your room and competitively bid it, so the recommendation answers to you, not a product line.
Should I get a projector or a TV?
A projector wins when you want a truly cinematic, large image (100 inches and up) in a room you can darken — it's the closest thing to a real movie theater. A TV wins for bright rooms, everyday viewing, sports, and gaming, where its higher brightness, perfect contrast, and simplicity shine. Many luxury homes do both: a TV in the great room and a projector in a dedicated theater.
Is a projector better than a TV for movies?
For dedicated movie watching in a light-controlled room, yes — the sheer scale of a 120-inch-plus image creates an immersion a TV can't match, and modern laser projectors deliver excellent color and contrast. But in a bright room, or for casual daytime viewing, a high-end TV will look punchier and more vivid. The right answer depends on the room more than the technology.
Can a projector replace a TV in a living room?
It can, with the right setup — an ambient-light-rejecting screen, good shading, and a bright laser projector. But for a multi-purpose living space with lots of daylight, a large premium TV is usually the more practical, lower-maintenance choice. We often recommend a TV for the everyday room and a projector for a separate theater.
